Welcome to The Exmoor White Horse Inn
September Newsletter if you are unable to view this newsletter please click here

Now that autumn is virtually upon us, for many it’s a time to reflect, take stock and look forward to a well earned Autumn break before the inevitable rush for Christmas starts to bombard us from all sections of the media.
Not only are the colours starting to change in the wooded combes like Horner Woods, but the overall landscape starts to take on a different complexion, like an artist’s palette, transfixing those lucky enough to be able to witness Exmoor in all her splendour, leaving a lasting impression on ones memory, like a huge canvas.

From about the middle of the month, there's a lot of activity on the Red Deer front, as we enter the Rutting season, and the stags start to round up the hinds, creating their own little harems, and seeing off any potential competition from other stags, or humans if you dare to get to close. Last Autumn for the first time in 21years, we ventured out on the moor before daybreak to witness the roaring of the stags, boy were we amazed at the sound coming from these majestic creatures, bellowing from combe to combe, it left us both feeling honoured to be out here alone witnessing this truly magical event. Begrudgingly our only disappointment was that we had not done this sooner.

Warmest regards,

Peter Hendrie

Exmoor Deer Rutting Season

September is a busy time of year with lots going on around Exmoor.

exmoor-deer-ruttingOne thing that Exmoor is very famous for is its large population of deer indeed its logo is that of a stag’s head. Sometimes they are very hard to find, but at a certain time of the year they have the rutting season, where it is really worth looking for them. The rutting season begins in September but peaks in October, and lasts for 1-3 months. Rutting is when the red deer that live on Exmoor mate. Guides can sometimes show you where to find the rutting deer so you can see their behaviour for yourself.

The Exmoor White Horse is offers a guided walk Saturday 16th October 2010 (Red Deer Rut) For more information >>>

The Countryside Code part 5

Keep Dogs Under Control

countryside-code

The countryside is a great place to exercise dogs, but it’s every owner’s duty to make sure their dog is not a danger or nuisance to farm animals, wildlife or other people.

By law, you must control your dog so that it does not disturb or scare farm animals or wildlife. On most areas of open country and common land, known as ‘access land’ you must keep your dog on a short lead on most areas of open country and common land between 1 March and 31 July, and all year round near farm animals.

You do not have to put your dog on a lead on public paths, as long as it is under close control. But as a general rule, keep your dog on a lead if you cannot rely on its obedience. By law, farmers are entitled to destroy a dog that injures or worries their animals.

If a farm animal chases you and your dog, it is safer to let your dog off the lead – don’t risk getting hurt by trying to protect it.

Take particular care that your dog doesn’t scare sheep and lambs or wander where it might disturb birds that nest on the ground and other wildlife – eggs and young will soon die without protection from their parents.

Everyone knows how unpleasant dog mess is and it can cause infections – so always clean up after your dog and get rid of the mess responsibly. Also make sure your dog is wormed regularly to protect it, other animals and people.

At certain times, dogs may not be allowed on some areas of access land or may need to be kept on a lead. Please follow any signs. You can also find out more by phoning the Open Access Contact Centre on 0845 100 3298.
